If this part is broken then you'll have an inoperative rear brake lever. This springs the lever back when pressure is applied, therefore allowing the rider to feather the brake on and off during riding.

Some springs have 3 coils, whilst others have 5 coils of spring, whichever you have, the springs are interchangeable with each other.
