Purves Makes His Mini Moto Mark.

25 January 2007

Youngster Calum Purves of Tromode finished 14th in the cadet class of the 2006 British Mini moto championship on his tiny Polini engined machine.
Ultimately, he managed to contest just three of the eight races that counted, but a second bike is to be added to the stable for next year which will hopefully help him to complete the full series.

The Rowrah meeting in Cumbria was nine-year-old Callum's first taste of competitive action against some very fast rivals.

The Ballacottier School pupil did extremely well to also finish 11th overall in the junior cadet class, knocking 10 seconds off his lap times in the process.

He suffered a major crash during qualifying for the penultimate round at Wilton Mill, near the Silverstone GP track in Northamptonshire, knocking him down the grid to 10th.

But he bounced back to ride consistently in the final and finish 11th overall. The course, regularly used for kart racing, was 850 metres in length.

Three fifths and one sixth in wet conditions at Llandow, South Wales left Callum a respectable 14th in his class overall, not bad considering the Island does not have the permanent racing facilities which would afford him the track time and racing experience to challenge at the front of the grid.

Nevertheless, the Tromode youngster hopes to go a lot quicker in preparation for a full attack on this year's championship.
